Going on vacation can be a stressful time, especially if you’re leaving your dog behind with a friend or at a boarding facility. Although we all do our best to ensure our pups are being left in good hands, accidents do happen and it can be difficult to deal with. Even under the best care, some dogs decide on their own that they’d rather go find their families. For a Great Pyrenees named General, this was much easier than any humans expected. Caught on Aquia-Garrisonville Animal Hospital’s security cameras, General gives a stunning Houdini-like performance during his great escape.

Travis Campbell, General’s owner, wasn’t entirely surprised by his dog’s skills. “He’s a little Houdini.  When it comes to doors he can get a lot of doors open,” he told ABC7. General certainly had no issue opening the door to his bedroom at the kennel, but that wasn’t the only door he had to go through. No big deal for General, he simply roamed around the animal hospital for about 2 hours, opening door after door until he found himself outside in their parking lot. There, he just wandered right away. Although we might expect an escape artist like General to be exhibiting signs of separation anxiety, he seems quite calm and comfortable with his adventure.

Needless to say, the animal hospital and the Campbell family were shocked. The hospital put signs up everywhere looking for General and thankfully had him returned around 7:30pm the day they discovered he was missing – nearly 15 hours after his great escape. Thankfully, he was returned safe and sound, completely unharmed and happy. The Campbells are definitely enjoying their vacation much more now that they know their Houdini dog is back where they left him.
