5 Questions To Ask Yourself Before Getting A Rottweiler

| Published on December 10, 2016

The Rottweiler is one of the most popular breeds in the United States, ranking 9th based on registration numbers in the American Kennel Club. It’s not surprising – they are an intelligent, loyal and beautiful dog that is a pleasure to own. But, like all breeds, there are some drawbacks and things you should consider if you are thinking about adding one to your family. Ask yourself the following 5 questions before getting a Rottweiler to make sure yours would make a good forever home.

#1 – Can I Afford Potential Health Problems?

Rottweilers are predisposed for a lot of health issues that are expensive to treat including: cancer, hip and elbow dysplasia, luxating patella, invertebral disk disease, heart disease, hypothyroidism, eye disease, and the risk of bloat, to name a few. Be sure you can afford the potential vet bills before bringing a Rottie home.

#2 – Do You Have Time To Properly Socialize Him?

While Rotties are generally friendly, they can have fear and aggression issues if they are not properly socialized. Socializing a young puppy correctly takes a lot of time. Re-socializing a rescue can take even longer. Be sure you have the time and are willing to do the work before bringing one home.

#3 – Am I Willing To Train Him?

Rottweilers are highly intelligent and that can make training challenging. Basic training is a must for any Rottie, otherwise they will become a menace to anyone who interacts with them. Due to their intelligence, they thrive on advanced training, so you really should expect to invest in more advanced work. They are perfect if you are looking for a performance dog – many of them excel in competition obedience, agility, rally, and canine freestyle.

#4 – Can I Provide Enough Exercise?

Along with training, Rottweilers need plenty of exercise. Bred to be an all-around farm dog, they have the energy to go all day. There are Rotties that even herd! So be sure you can provide enough physical as well as mental exercise. Otherwise, you will end up with a bored Rottie and a bored Rottie is a destructive Rottie.

#5 – Are You Allowed To Have One?

Like Pit Bulls, Rottweilers have been the victim of BSL (Breed Specific Legislation). Some cites have banned them, and it can be harder to get rentals if you own a Rottie. Make sure that where you live allows a Rottie before getting one and ask yourself if you are able to choose future housing based on whether your dog is welcome or not.
