School Tries To Ban Disabled Boy’s Service Dog Because He’s A Pit Bull

| Published on March 18, 2015

Several weeks ago, we featured a service dog named Stevie. Stevie is a Pit Bull-type dog, and he watches over seven-year-old Anthony Merchante who has Cerebral Palsy. Steven has become Anthony’s loyal friend and guardian angel. Anthony’s mother, Monica, says that Stevie has made such a huge impact on the boy and the family as well. She adds that they feel so much safer now that they have Stevie.

Whenever Anthony has a seizure or has trouble breathing, Stevie immediately alerts Anthony’s caregivers. Not only has Stevie helped Anthony with his condition, but he has helped the boy emotionally as well. This is why Anthony’s mom believe that Stevie should go with Anthony when he goes to school, so he can watch over him and alert human responders when he has one of his recurring seizures.

However, school administrators in Broward County Florida are fighting to keep Stevie out. They argue that a dog does not belong in the school. Anthony’s mom, Monica, had to fight back. She knows how important Stevie the Pit Bull is to her son’s well-being. So she took the case to court.

Well you’re gonna be happy to hear the verdict for this case! U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom ruled in favor of Stevie, Anthony, and Monica! And the Department of Justice noted that “public entities generally must permit individuals with disabilities to be accompanied by their service animals.” It was such a happy day for the family! Check out their photo below with their lawyer, Matthew Dietz.

We’re so happy that Stevie is allowed to go with Anthony to school! After all, he is properly trained to look after the little boy. I believe Stevie’s mere presence alone can help Stevie cope with his condition.
