Dog Rescued From Hurricane Katrina Has Been Waiting 10 Years To Find A Home

| Published on January 9, 2017

It’s hard to forget the havoc that Hurricane Katrina wreaked on Louisiana over a decade ago. Amidst the devastation, thousands of animals became homeless, losing their families to never be reunited again.

One of these unfortunate pups was Dodger, a Lab / Catahoula Leopard Dog mix. Because of the overflow of stray animals, many were transported to shelters around the country. So in May 2007, Dodger made his way to the Southold Animal Shelter in New York.

The pup, who’d lost his home and loved ones, patiently waited for his new forever family. Ten years later, he’s still waiting.

Through the years, the North Fork Animal Welfare League, Inc. (which is affiliated with the shelter) has posted Dodger’s story on Facebook, trying to help him find the family that he’s been looking for.

He’s timid with strangers, so a bustling shelter is certainly not the ideal place for this sweet senior dog.

But don’t let his initial shyness fool you! He warms up to strangers after a couple of treats, then he can’t wait to be their best friend.

“After you’ve introduced yourselves he’ll get so excited to see you, his whole body starts to wiggle with excitement!” reads his Petfinder profile.

He’ll make the perfect companion for anyone who’d love some company while relaxing on the couch or taking a leisurely walk – he does great on a leash!

Dodger would do best in a quiet home where there’s not a lot of noise or strange visitors. He’d prefer to be with a family that doesn’t have young kids, and wants to be your one and only four-legged companion!

This sweet senior boy will make a loving, loyal friend for anyone who’s willing to give him a chance. Will you be Dodger’s Valentine this year?

For information on adopting Dodger, visit his adoption profile, or call The North Fork Animal Welfare League at 631-765-1811, ext. 1.

Share this story to help Dodger find his forever home in time for Valentine’s Day!
