Alpha is only 4-years-old, but the black Labrador Retriever is in high school already. He attends alongside his human companion, junior A.J. Schalk.

When Alpha came to live with A.J. and his family at just 4-months-old, he had an important job to do. A.J. suffers from diabetes and Alpha is there to let him know when his blood sugar is getting too low. It’s a crucial task that can help save A.J.’s life. So when it came time for yearbook photos, A.J. really wanted his best friend to be included in the memories.

“I just wanted to have my service dog in the yearbook,” he told NBC. “I thought it’d be a great little thing, to put in to have for my school and me to look back on when I’m older.”

The yearbook staff agreed and now Alpha sits wide-eyed at the bottom of his photo.

His big, adorable eyes are the perfect window to his gentle soul. Alpha is the perfect dog to be at school with A.J.

“Where you see A.J., you see Alpha. Where you see Alpha, you see A.J., and he’s just one of the gang,” said Principal Joseph Lewis.

A.J. plans to keep it that way as he says wherever he ends up after high school, Alpha will be going with him.

Service dogs perform special, life-saving tasks every day for their humans. They deserve an amazing amount of respect and appreciation. Alpha is a wonderful member of his family, a great help to A.J., and has given the students of his high school the opportunity to see his work in action. Here’s to many years to come!
