After being fired from the force, it didn’t take long for Gavel the German Shepherd to find a sweet new job. The Queensland Police Service in Brisbane, Australia was training Gavel to be a police dog, but they decided to pull him out of the 16-month training program. The reason why he was fired? He was just too friendly.

Gavin wasn’t interested in chasing down bad guys. Instead, he wanted all the cuddles he could get. The sociable pup started his training when he was only 10 weeks old, but he suddenly found himself in need of a career change. Luckily, the governor of Queensland, Paul de Jersey AC, knew exactly what to do.

During his time in training, Gavel lived at the governor’s official residence and had already made quite the impression. Instead of giving Gavel up, the governor decided to make the dog an official part of his family.

But that wasn’t all he did. In addition to Gavel’s new role as a family dog, he was also awarded the prestigious title of Vice-Regal Dog. Gavel officially signed his contract and accepted the new job title in February.

As his contract dictates, the former police pup in training is now responsible for tasks that are best suited to his loving personality. His official duties include welcoming visitors to the governor’s residence and attending official ceremonies as a canine government representative.

Since taking on the role, Gavel has jumped paws first into embracing his responsibilities. He enjoys strutting around his new digs in his official governor’s garb, and he greets visitors with the confident enthusiasm his role requires. He was the star at the Government House Open Day, but he hasn’t let the attention go to his head.

He’s still the sweet, goofy dog that flunked out of police school, and the job change is exactly what he needed. Queensland residents are happy to welcome the Vice-Regal Dog into the community, and he’s sure to have a happy life and successful career.
