Our Pittie (picture below) tore her ACL and it caused her tibia to shift forward so she had to have major surgery to repair the injury. They attached a bracket to her tibia to replace her ACL and she has staples to keep the incision together. It has been a week since her surgery and she is doing well. She is a very well behaved dog, is older (around 11) so she doesn’t have crazy puppy energy so we have been keeping her confined to the living room where we feel she would be most comfortable. We removed the couch cushions from the couch so it is barely a foot off the ground so she can easily step onto it.

Yesterday, however, the Pest Control people were out at our house without our knowing and it clearly agitated her because we could tell she had been barking at the window and now she is favoring her injured leg a little more than she has been the last couple days. We are keeping a sharp eye on it as we feel like she just over extended herself but it is stressful for us because we work and can’t stay with her during the weekday.

Just looking for advice from other dog owners about how they handled the recovery of their dogs with this type of surgery. Thank you in advance for any advice or shared experiences.

My corso had tplo surgery (Almost 2 years ago) for that very issue. We thought she had messed up her knee again because she was limping and they did an xray for free on it to make sure everything was fine. She did end up blowing her other knee about a year and a half later so keep and eye on her. Ask your vet for some anti-inflammatories if you don’t already have some. They help a little with the pain but it’s kinda like doggy ibuprofen (without the ibuprofen lol) it will help with swelling and healing. I think we were given carprofen. Just have to make sure puppy eats something before our after taking it because ut can cause ulcers.
