Hi. Does anyone have any advice for a highly strung Weim? Our girl is now 5 and has always been extremely neurotic with protecting our property. She is very friendly and never threatens to bite anyone but if someone walks past or if a dog in the same suburb barks she goes ballistic. We have been consistent with discipline but even though she knows we want her to stop by us telling her to “settle” and letting her know we hear her she will squeal and bark and carry on…it sounds like we are hitting her the way she carries on. We live on an acre and she is also exercised, she now has a brother and this has made no difference, we have had a fantastic dog trainer that helped with our Great Danes behaviour but couldn’t crack our Weim, she is entertained with activities and attention and around people a lot. She has also just (in the last year) started to be really terrified of storms and fireworks. She just wants to please and protect us but we need to calm her down somehow. We appreciate that any dog will bark when someone walks past but this is beyond anything any other dog does! The vet has suggested anti anxiety meds but I’d like to hear of other options please. Thanks

I, too, have a very energetic, 18 month old Weim mix. The vet said 90% Weim, 10% Lab. The only thing different that might be Lab are her ears. Anyhow, she loves to jump the fence and go after the squirrels or just run into the woods. Amazing how they forget their name all of a sudden. She learns quickly, but she can be so stubborn, too. My trainer has suggested we get a shock collar to control her running away. She only barks when people are approaching the house, so maybe you might want to try a “no-bark collar”. Just a suggestion.
