Has anyone braved the task of home grooming?? Having just adopted my first Bichon (I’ve owned Yorkies for the last 24 yrs) I thought I could handle this task, as I’ve always groomed my Yorkies, yet the Bichon coat is MUCH different. I know as they age the coat will become more curly, and I’m looking for any tips of the trade others may have to offer. Thanks!

Yes, I have groomed my Bichons for nearly 20 years. It is really pretty easy. Hints: brush, brush, brush. Keep her tangle free-will help sooo much. She will need to be bathed every couple of weeks (depends on how much time & what the condition of her outside area is like. Her pic shows a ‘puppy cut’ rather than the more formal ‘show (rounded head)’ cut. I have always done the puppy cut-think it is much cuter. First thing is to get a GOOD pair of clippers. Spend the money to get a cordless, ceramic blade clipper. at $40-70/clip, you will save a ton of money! Get a good “how to” book. Go slow, get her use to the clipper, turn them on & just run the back over her belly, back. Don’t worry – it won’t be perfect the first few times, but she won’t care:) She seems pretty small. Kitchen sink with sprayer might work. If you use shower (I do) or bath-get an 8′ sprayer for it…will make baths so much easier. Even now, every once in a while, I’ll be lazy & take my boy in to have him professionally done. Your new baby is adorable. Best of luck!

Thank you for the tips 🙂 I actually prefer the puppy cut, and your Bichon wears it well. I have actually found the ‘brush brush brush’ to be a must, as
their coats are almost as thick as cotton. Thankfully he has adapted quickly to both the brushing, clippers and bathing. We’ve even used the kiddie pool
in the backyard as the water becomes warm by mid afternoon and our other dog (a silky terrier) will entertain him. I will take your advice on the cordless clippers as being a pup he is still quite squirmy and curious about the grooming (and sometimes a bit obstinate) 🙂 The hardest part I’ve encountered is trimming around the feet – and that is mainly due to his puppy attention span, which I’m sure will improve with age and continued grooming.

Now for the eye tear staining ……the topical products seem useless so I have started using Angel’s Eyes – hope that wll help.

Below is a photo of Sir Cullen, mastering the ‘sit’ command. Very treat motivated 🙂

Hello everyone, I was wondering how can I get the cotton ball look for my young man Cody? He is 6 years old and I groom him myself. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
