      Hi,
I have a year old Maltese. I got her when she was 8 months old, the people who had her before me didn’t do any training and left her tied up outside.

So when I got her we had to start with basics, we are slowly getting there. However every time I take her out a walk she will bark at any other dogs and sometimes people.

It’s not a stressed or threatening bark, and once I let her go over to meet the dog/person she will bark a bit longer then stop.

I recently started to allow her off her lead when I go to the park, the first time I did this, she never barked at all. But then she started barking and running over to the dog and will continue to bark for a bit and stop. Again it’s not a stressed/angry bark nor would I say it’s playful as she usually rubs away from the dog once the pay attention to her.

Any advice welcome and much appreciated

      Thanks
      Karen

      HI there,

Don’t worry pal, you’re not alone.
Seems like your dog would just like to get the attention of other dogs when you’re out walking.
As for my dog, she would really bark angrily at any dog that she sees outside. She would even like to run after them and chase them.
I am not a professional dog trainer, but I think it would be better if you try to let her loose in a friend’s house who also owns a dog.
Try observing her attitude while meeting other dogs. It is a negative aggression or she is just being plain playful?
sometimes, the reason why they become so aggressive is their isolation from other dogs.
It worked for my dog and she never bullied any dog up to this time. 🙂

Your maltese is on the adjustment period, just take it easy. It actually normal when a dog barks at another dog. Sooner or later she will be able to adapt on her new environment. Don’t give up on her, and show her some love that the former owners failed to provide.
