Forest who is a 3 year old rescue is a dachshund tweenie. I have had him for a year and suddenly he has started humping one of my female dachshunds. Raya is a mini dachshund who is 7 years.

Forest was fixed just before his rescue and at that time he was 2 years old which I am thinking might have something to do with his behavior. The 2 play a lot and in playing this humping starts. I let him know that this is not ok but he keeps it up and my Raya does not like it but let’s him do it. Could this be a form of domination? Forest is very needy when it comes to attention and will push Raya away from me to get my full attention.

Does anyone have any advice on this?

You need to stop this behavior now and make it clear that is is not allowed. Maybe put him in a crate every time he does it and make sure he knows he is going to jail each time. Don’t feel sorry for him. Walk away and give him time out. He is exhibiting dominate behavior. Give equal attention to both dogs. He is jealous. I would suggest that you make sure he knows that you are the boss. There are several passive things you can do to help him understand this concept. When dogs are not confident in their leaders, they feel they must take charge and this is a heavy burden for them to bear. Always make sure you walk out the door first, not him. Tell him where he is allowed to relieve himself, not where he selects. After all, your neighbors don’t want their flower gardens ruined. Put a leash on him and attach it to you while you putter around the house. He just has to hang out wherever you are and like it or not! When you leave the house without the dogs, just walk out like you are going to the mailbox or something. Don’t make a big deal about it. When you return, ignore him until he is in a calm state and then pet him. If you come home and make a big to do about him, it makes him think he is the king of the household. When visitors come, tell them to ignore him until he is calm for the same reason. Don’t allow him to jump in your lap uninvited. This is dominate behavior when he is above you like that. Dogs play king of the mountain whether you do or not. For more serious training advice get our DVD at http://www.applewoodsdogtraining.com
