18 months ago I took in 2 chihuahua brothers who were 2 and half years old. I have 2 chi girls myself and they settled in really well until my one girl was in season and the 2 brothers fought resulting to a scratch on his eye. After he was treated I still kept them all in separate cages at night which neither of them minded as its only night time they are in there and only because the boys were not toilet trained. All of a sudden he became aggressive when I closed the cage, even though he goes in of his own choice throughout the day and sometimes the other cages as their all open. He’s also started growling and turning nasty on my son. Their previous owner had a son the same age as mine which made me think he may have abused him in some way, but when we first had him he was all for my son. I know it will sound as if my son had done something but I am with these dogs all day everyday so I know it’s not my son. He’s even started doing it to my other son and last week he was growling for no apparent reason while my son was standing by the cage and when he turned around he came out and bit him on the leg. I love all my dogs the same and don’t agree with getting rid of any ever . I have tried given him more attention and walks etc but he’s so aggressive it’s got to the point he will not let me put the harness on him to go for walk as its half on then he goes nuts. He can come up to me being nice to get stroked and can be good as gold then turns nasty. I seriously think there’s something wrong but just don’t know what. While he is growling his tail is wagging so need help with him, I’ve had chihuahuas all my life and never seen this is any of them, but I don’t breed them. Luckily he did not break the skin when he bit my son but don’t want it to happen again. Everyone tells me to get rid of him but I can’t give up on him and although the people I had him off seemed really nice I can not contact them to find out if he ever behaved like this, to be honest I think he did which is why they didn’t want him, any help would be deeply appreciated, thanks.

You didn’t state in your letter whether or not your males are neutered, but if they are not, that could be the cause of such aggression. Especially when your female is in season, that can cause serious aggression issues in animals. Unless you plan on breeding your dogs, ALL of them need to be spayed and neutered. You will see a remarkable difference in your males as far as aggression goes, and if you spay your females you wont have to worry anymore. If money is an issue, there is an organization that sells discount spay and neuter services if you go to their recommended vets in your area. Their name is Friends of Animals Spay and Neuter Program. Google them. Once all your dogs are fixed, if his aggression doesn’t improve, then you need to look at what is happening in your household that could be causing this anger in him. Even if you have to have an animal behaviorist come in, you shouldn’t have to get rid of him just because he is having some issues with behavior.
