We have just put a deposit down on a springer Spaniels, we have 3 children under the age of 7, everyone I know is saying we are making a mistake in the choice of breed. I really like the look of the dog and the size, the puppy is coming from a farm with working dog parents. We have a 10 acre and a farmer puts sheep in some of our fields we also have 2 ponies. Am I talking on to much as everyone says to me that they run away and are very very hard to train, they never sit still and are a lot of hard work, they pee in the house all the time as they are so excited, we have bought a male dog…..any advice would be great so I can make the final decision to walk away from the deposit or go for it……thank you…Paula

Paula, our springers loved our kids, grandkids, other pets. They are smart and easy to train. One lived to age 21, the other was almost 18. They never went anywhere, they were Velcro. Our kids have springers too, and they stay with the family always, the kids ride their bikes and dogs stay right with them. They are the perfect size and so loyal! They require regular grooming, one of our dogs had chronic ear problems, but it was an easy fix. I don’t know where your advisors have gotten those negative traits and wonder if it’s from personal experience or they have “heard”? Do your own research and Good luck

Paula, we have a 6 month old ESS that we got in June. We also have 3 kids under the age of 7. 🙂 She as been the perfect dog for our family! She is SO good with all the kids– she doesn’t show favoritism and has a special relationship with each of them (something we love about the breed!) She has been very easy to train and super smart! We have a small yard so we take her out on lots of walks and runs in open fields, but she always stays close and never wanders far. She is also great with our cat, very gentle and playful, even though she’s a puppy! All in all, we have been so happy with the breed (she’s our first ESS, we had a lab before). And everyone in our family adores her. Best of luck to you! I hope it works out!

Hey Paula,
Sorry I’m just signing up for this website. I saw your story on whether you should get a Springer. Did you get one?
I have one, Coco will be 15 years old in April. he is the very best dog and while my children were growing up he was the babysitter. No kidding.
of course now he is slowing down. but always he is by my side. Oh he was very easy to train. Never destroying anything and still does his business outside.
See the attachment, At Christmas he loves ripping up tissue paper, never eating it, lolThanks for listening,
Mary Flint & Coco

Whoever told you to that has NO EXPERIENCE with the breed, or never took the time to interact with them. I have had Springers for almost 40 years, bred a few litters, and just last week brought 7 week old Julio into our pack. MOST AMAZING BREED! When walking them, expect to be stopped by people who have been with springer spaniels and hear their stories and see the love they have for the breed in their eyes. Eager to learn and please, loyal, playful, tend to stay within 50 yards of you (instinct of flushing birds close enough for shotgun). Suggest watching Cesar Milan (Dog whisperer), made life easier with 6 springer spaniel at once!
