Sandy is a 14-year-old dog whose owner surrendered her to one of Pets for Patriots shelter partners. She had severe dental disease, nails so overgrown that they inhibited her walking, and other signs of poor care. While shelters are stressful places for any dog or cat, they are particularly difficult for older animals.

Tiffany is retired from the Navy and applied to Pets for Patriots nearly two years prior. For various reasons, she did not complete her application at the time, and got back in touch with the organization in early 2017. Tiffany was ready to adopt! Pets for Patriots helped her complete her application, and she immediately visited the shelter to adopt little Sandy.

Often overlooked by the adopting public, senior pets are among those eligible for the benefits of Pets for Patriots’ program, along with animals with special needs, and large breed dogs. Tiffany’s adoption of Sandy is a wonderful example of the organization’s focus on the most overlooked, undervalued dogs and cats. They make wonderful companions and family members, and deserve a second chance at life. Sandy is a perfect example, as she has been a great companion to Tiffany and has a calming effect on her that a younger pup may not.
