Lima, Peru is a major Latin American metropolis overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It harbors a large population of stray dogs that wander the city throughout the day in search of food. Sadly, many are subject to injuries, often due to being hit by cars. Sara Moran has devoted her life – and her home – to creating a safe haven for these injured and paralyzed pups.

Moran calls the refuge “Milagros Perrunos” which translates to Doglike Miracles. All of the animals she lovingly tends to are available for adoption.

About 60 dogs currently call Milagros Perrunos home.

The majority of Peru’s street dogs – or Callajeros – are male according to Moran, and very few are spayed or neutered. The large populations reproduce freely, adding to the problems of disease and food scarcity.

Moran began her mission eight years ago when she rescued a Basset Hound mix named Bruno who had been hit by a car and paralyzed in his hind end. He is one of eight canine residents dependent on the use of a wheelchair for his mobility.

When they are not rolling about the home, Moran ensures all the paralyzed pups have clean diapers and a cozy spot to rest in one of Milagros Perrunos’ many repurposed baby cribs.

While most of the survivors at Milagros Perrunos have avoided paralysis, all have suffered injuries, including several amputations.

Moran relies on donations to care for the dozens of special needs dogs depending on her. Food costs for 60 dogs add up quickly and she must limit the use of the air conditioner to save money.

She never takes a holiday or calls in sick. Each day is spent feeding, cleaning and lavishing affection on the dogs. The ones with paralysis have their diapers changed five times a day like clockwork.

Despite the hardships and heartbreaks that come along with caring for the dogs of Milagros Perrunos, Moran would not have it any other way. When visited by Ralph Quinonez of The Dodo, she told him they never pity themselves because they are sick or injured. They appreciate every moment. “I feel like the dogs love to live,” she said.
