| Published on January 11, 2023
Choosing a food for your new lab puppy can be confusing! While good advice can be gleaned from your rescue, breeder, or veterinarian, there are a wide range of opinions about which puppy food is best and you may receive contradictory advice. We asked our 800,000 member lab community on facebook the following question: “What food did you feed your lab puppy?” We received hundreds of replies, and summarized the top responses below.
Please be sure to consult your veterinarian before making any health changes to your lab puppy’s diet. iHeartDogs is reader supported, so some of the links below may be affiliate links where we receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.

We have a rescued fur baby and a Lab, they get nothing but Fromm’s. Family owned business for many years with no recalls. They carry an assortment of flavors for puppies to senior dogs plus cat food. They are very helpful with any questions you may have. Highly recommend their foods.

I have used Blue Buffalo for all my dogs. And all five of them were healthy and lived several years more than their breeds lifespan. They also have anti-inflammatory in most of their foods and it allows your dog’s to be pain free and live longer.

We have had Labs for the past 50 years. My brother-in-law is a vet and sells Hill’s Science Diet, as well as others. Our last three Chocolate Labs have experienced food allergies when on Hill’s, so we were forced to take them off Science Diet or start allergy treatment! We tried Kirkland Brand from Costco, the one with the Chocolate Lab on the bag, and his coat improved, and the food allergy symptoms disappeared. We have used it for a number of years with great success!

I volunteer with a lab rescue that covers 7 states – we have many vets that we work with for our rescues & all recommend Purina Pro Plan Puppy-Large Breed. I tend to stick with either the turkey or lamb flavors since I’ve dealt with many that are allergic to chicken.
