Summertime; the heat is on, kids are out of school and all thoughts turn to vacation. Then the family dog comes in and plants herself at her human’s feet.  Boarding a dog can be expensive and may be worrisome for a first time owner. Should thoughts of vacation be scrapped? Absolutely not! Below are some of the most dog friendly destinations in North America and some global inspiration

Chicago, IL.

Chicago boasts miles of parks and walking trails, canine friendly outdoor restaurants, bars and cafés. Most hotels, even the more pricey ones, allow dogs. Take the dog for a walk along the Navy Pier. In the spring, the White Sox Baseball team hosts an annual “Dog Days”. Fans and their four legged friends can enjoy a game and a hot dog together.

Boston, MA

The city of Boston allows leashed, well behaved dogs of all sizes to accompany their owners on the public transit system. Trails and parks offer a number of exercise opportunities from the leisurely stroll to a 2 mile trek through the city on the Freedom Trail. Carson beach is a good place for a dip during the heat of the day.

Many of the hotels, both upscale and not so upscale, allow dogs on the premises. Many of the public transit systems including the cable cars and some of the ferries allow well behaved, leashed dogs to sit with their owners while they take in the sights and sounds of the city. Treat the dog to some ice cream at Ghiradelli Square. The San Francisco Giants hold an annual “Dogs Day” in August. Baseball, man’s best friend, and a cold brew on a hot day every fan’s dream.

San Antonio, TX

Take the dog to visit the outside of the Alamo (dogs aren’t allowed in the Alamo) or Market Square. Grab a bite to eat in one of the many outdoor cafes throughout the city. Stroll through the center of this thriving metropolis on the River Walk. Shop, relax and take in the history of San Antonio with a four legged companion.
