Generally speaking, all dogs require some grooming. Some, however, need quite a bit more than others. With so many dog breeds in the world, we can find pretty much anything we’re looking for – from hairless dogs to dogs with dreads. Some breeds do just fine with a bath every once in a while and others need regular brushing, clipping, and blow-drying. This can take quite a bit of extra time and money, so if you’re looking to avoid extensive grooming, you’ll enjoy the breeds on this list.

#1 – Beagle

The Beagle is one of the smallest hound breeds and a popular companion. They are moderately active, extremely social, and make great pets for people of all ages, including children. Beagles have short, smooth coats that do shed but require little more than regular brushing. Originally bred for hunting hare, they are often used as detection dogs due to their excellent sense of smell and friendly disposition.

#2 – Rottweiler

The Rottweiler is a German breed originally used as an all-purpose farm dog. They would drove cattle and pull carts of butchered meat to the market and serve as guardians of their property. Today you can find them as police and military dogs in some places, but more often as loving companions. They are good-natured and eager to work, deeply loyal to their families, and affectionate with those they know. They have short, thick coats that shed but need little more than weekly brushing.

#3 – Doberman Pinscher

Developed as a personal protection dog that has also served in police and military work, the Doberman Pinscher is a powerful worker. However, because they are not often needed for these roles any longer, their temperaments have been softened to create loving family companions. They are social with those they know and aloof with strangers, though they are open to making friends. Their short coats require very little grooming.

#4 – German Shorthaired Pointer

The German Shorthaired Pointer is a medium-sized hunting breed that is still widely used for this task today. Because of this, they are very active dogs that need a lot of exercise. They are social, friendly, and eager to please, making them great companions for active families. As their name suggests, they have short coats that require very little grooming. They are heavy shedders, however, so brushing is recommended.

#5 – Great Dane

The Great Dane is one of the largest breeds of dogs, reaching upwards of 180lbs. They were bred first as hunting dogs and then as guardians, but today they are most often found napping on their human’s couch. They are very friendly and clownish and their short coats need little maintenance outside of weekly brushing.

#6 – Chihuahua

There are two variations of Chihuahua, a smooth and rough coat. The smooth-coated dogs are the easier to groom, as they have short, tight coats rather than long, flowing hair. Smooth coats require just occasional brushing. Despite their size, they are excellent watch dogs. Although they will generally not protect their owners, they will alert to someone approaching their home. Known for being sassy, the breed is also quite charming and playful with its family.

#7 – Boston Terrier

Boston Terriers are sturdy, social dogs that are known for being the “class clowns” of the dog world. They are friendly dogs that are eager to greet friends, family, and strangers alike. Owners of Boston Terriers often comment on how amusing their dogs are, because of their playfulness and intelligence. With their short, thin coats, the breed requires very little grooming maintenance.
