8 Problems Only a Whippet Owner Would Understand

With their sweet-natured personalities and athletic physique, Whippets can make great pets. But, as any Whippet owner can tell you, there are some unique ‘problems’ you might encounter with this breed.

1. Lightning Speed.

Whippets are fast. Like, really fast. So fast, you may think your dog has teleportation powers. One moment they are at your side, and the next, they are at the end of the park. Keeping up with a Whippet is a workout in itself.

2. The Insta-Warm Lap.

Despite their lean and muscular bodies, Whippets are heat-seeking missiles. Expect to have your lap frequently commandeered by your Whippet seeking warmth and snuggles.

3. The Cat-Like Canine.

Whippets can often exhibit cat-like tendencies. They love to perch on high surfaces, curl up in the sunniest spots in the house, and yes, they can be as finicky as felines too.

4. The Chase is On!

With their inherent prey drive, Whippets love a good chase. Squirrels, rabbits, leaves, shadows – it doesn’t matter. If it moves, your Whippet is probably going to chase it.

5. The Sofa Hogger.

Whippets are couch potatoes. They believe the softest, most comfortable spot in the house, which is usually your sofa or bed, is rightfully theirs. Be ready to lose your seat anytime you stand up.

6. The Food Thief.

Whippets are counter-surfers. With their height and slender physique, no kitchen counter is out of reach. That cake you just baked? It might be a Whippet snack before you know it!

7. The Clothes Hound.

Given their thin coat and very little body fat, Whippets are prone to feeling cold. This means doggy sweaters, coats, and even pajamas are all part of the wardrobe. Expect your Whippet to have a better clothing collection than you.

8. The Sensitive Soul.

Whippets are emotionally sensitive creatures. Harsh words or raised voices can easily upset them, so training requires patience, kindness, and plenty of treats. You’ll quickly learn the art of gentle persuasion.

Owning a Whippet, with its unique quirks and ‘problems’, is a delightful and enriching experience. Their affectionate nature, combined with their playful and active side, makes them a joy to have around. Yes, they might claim your couch, eat your freshly baked cake, and run like a bolt of lightning when off-leash, but the joy and companionship they bring into your life far outweigh these hilarious quirks. It’s all part of the Whippet charm that you’ve come to love!
