A Ditch, a Lonely Pup, and a Surprise They Never Expected

On what seemed like an ordinary day in Fresno, California, a compassionate couple was driving along a quiet rural road when something deeply unsettling caught their attention. Just as that worry took hold, a little furry face peeked out from the ditch. It was the mother dog, who would soon be named Momma Maisie. She looked at Wolcott cautiously, unsure whether to trust her. Right by her side, the days-old puppy was still curled up tightly, trying to stay warm.

Wolcott’s heart melted at the sight. Despite the rain and the cold, the mother dog had stayed by her baby’s side, doing everything in her power to protect her. She gently approached the pair, and to her surprise, Momma Maisie allowed her to get close. It was as if she sensed that help had finally arrived.

The pair were transported to their foster home where their healing journey could finally begin.

When they arrived, it became clear that both Momma Maisie and her puppy, who was lovingly named Oreo, were in critical need of care. Momma Maisie was severely underweight and suffering from a variety of internal parasites. Her ribs were showing and her eyes carried the weight of exhaustion.

She was placed on a high-protein, nutrient-rich diet to help her regain her strength. The rescue team also began treatment for her parasite infestations to ensure she could recover as quickly and safely as possible.

Little Oreo, being just a few days old, required constant attention. Because she was too young to nurse properly, her foster parent had to tube-feed her every few hours. It was a demanding task that required dedication and love, but her foster was more than willing to do whatever it took to help her survive.

As days turned into weeks, the transformation in both dogs was nothing short of remarkable. Momma Maisie began to fill out and her coat started to shine. She learned to relax in her new environment and began showing affection toward her caregivers. It was clear that despite everything she had been through, her spirit was still intact.

Oreo also began to grow stronger. She opened her eyes and began exploring her surroundings with curiosity. Her playful energy emerged and her personality started to shine. Described by her foster family as strong-willed and determined, Oreo became a bundle of joy who brought smiles to everyone around her.

The bond between Momma Maisie and Oreo remained unbreakable. Momma Maisie watched over her puppy like a true guardian, always keeping her close and comforting her through every milestone.

In just a few short weeks, Momma Maisie and Oreo had gone from surviving in a cold ditch to thriving in a warm and loving home. Their foster family gave them not only medical care and shelter, but something they had likely never known before—unconditional love.

As Oreo continues to grow, she will soon be old enough to be spayed. Once that milestone is reached, both she and Momma Maisie will be ready to begin their search for forever homes. Homes where they will never again have to worry about being left behind or going hungry. Homes where they will be cherished for the rest of their lives.
