At the ARF Hamptons shelter, Aaliah was known for being one of the most timid dogs. Sadly, she remained at the shelter for two years, overlooked because of her demeanor. She often retreated to her kennel, as it was the one place she truly felt secure. The shelter staff would coax her gently to come out, but she was always reluctant. It tugged at their heartstrings to see her there for so long, always retreating to her corner. When potential adopters came to meet her, Aaliah would shyly move into a corner of the room, avoiding contact.

When one woman, Gabby, and her family were interested in adopting Aaliah, she tirelessly worked to gain her trust. The process was a long one. However, by the end of several visits, she would let Gabby pet her without needing any treats to lure her. That was the sign everyone had been waiting for—she was ready to go to her new home.

The first few days in her new home were tough. Aaliah preferred staying in her crate, where she felt most comfortable. “She was super excited but still kept her distance,” her new owners noted in the video below. Whenever her family returned home, Gabby would try to approach her, but Aaliah’s anxiety was clear. But they were patient, knowing it would take time.

Slowly, her personality began to shine. One week, she started to play with a toy; the next, she grew more relaxed during walks. After about a month, Aaliah seemed to embrace her new life, finally acting like a typical dog. Now, instead of shying away, she nudges her nose under their hands for attention. “If we stop petting her, she immediately comes back for more,” Gabby laughed.

Her love for attention grew, and they adored it. At the dog park, her confidence blossomed. “She loves playing with the dogs,” Gabby shared, thrilled to see her coming out of her shell. Aaliah also loved going back to ARF to visit her friends. She will never forget how much these kind people mean to her.

The staff was always ecstatic to see her. Those who had cared for her at the shelter adored her, and she was now very popular. She even helped with training, working to socialize dog-aggressive animals. “No dog has ever disliked Aaliah,” they said proudly.

Target decided to keep selling eggs and pork that come from caged chickens and crated pigs indefinitely despite the pledge made nearly a decade ago to stop using cruel cages and gestation crates. Sign now to urge Target’s CEO to stop supporting animal cruelty.

Watching her growth filled everyone with pride. “I’m so excited to see the progress she will continue to make with us,” Gabby beamed. Aaliah’s transformation from a shy, withdrawn dog to a confident, playful pup is nothing short of amazing.
