In the blazing July heat in 2016, a family moved out of their Indiana home and left their two young dogs locked up in a chain-link pen. Luckily, a kind neighbor saw Buddy and Red Rosie suffering and contacted River Valley Humane Society.

Located in Elizabeth, Indiana, River Valley Humane Society is one organization that receives Rescue Bank food donations. Saving money on pet food allows them to put their money into rescuing more animals like these two dogs.

The organization explained how valuable support from donors and Greater Good Charities is to running their animal rescue:

“Most of our rescues are in Crawford County Indiana where there is no shelter, no access to a shelter or animal control services and no veterinarian. Our rescued animals come from the sides of gravel roads, from under abandoned houses and found injured in wooded areas.”

A New Start With A Loving Family

The cruelly abandoned dog rescuers found in 2016 now has a wonderful life. A loving family adopted Buddy in March of 2017. According to RVHS:

“The adopting family enjoys hiking and they look forward to taking Buddy along with their Labrador Retriever as they enjoy the beautiful trails of Southern Indiana.”

No more chains and pens for this happy guy! The grin says it all.

Rescue Bank Allowed The River Valley Humane Society To Save These Dogs

Rescuing dogs from cruelty situations like the one Buddy and Red Rosie were found in is obviously important and valuable work. Still, running an animal rescue can get extremely expensive. Any way you can save money allows you to help more animals. That’s where Rescue Bank comes in.

Rescue Bank operates on the national food bank model, accepting food donations from manufacturers, distributors, or retailers. Their suppliers include brands like Pedigree, Purina, Friskies, and Iams.

When nutritious pet food nears its “best by” date, has minor packaging defects, or is being re-branded, manufacturers will donate that food. Then, Rescue Bank makes food grants to community-based animal welfare groups. These donations allow the rescues to use their funds where they’re most needed, like additional spay/neuter and vet services, facility improvements, adoption events, and more.

As River Valley Humane Society put it:

“We learned about the Rescue Bank food program early last year, 2016. It was such a sense of relief knowing we would be able to provide quality food for our rescues and help more cats and dogs due to the savings on pet food.”
