Abandoned dogs often struggle when they move from a loving home to the noisy, busy environment of a shelter. Imagine how scared and confused a dog feels when suddenly surrounded by strange noises, without their owner, and in a completely unfamiliar place. During these tough times, the kindness of shelter workers and volunteers is incredibly important for these scared dogs. One of these dogs was a Pittie mix lovingly named Andy Cohen, like the well-known American radio and TV host. Andy ended up at the Tift County Animal Shelter in Tifton, Georgia, with three other dogs because their owner had to return to long hours driving a truck and could no longer find sufficient care for them.

They arrived at the shelter in early November 2023. Leah Robinson, who coordinates rescues at the shelter, told Newsweek that the dogs were clearly upset when they got there, sticking close to each other out of fear. “They were heartbroken when they arrived, all huddled together and scared. Andy Cohen was shy, crying and feeling abandoned,” she said. To help get these dogs adopted or placed in foster homes during the holiday season, the shelter posted a moving video of Andy looking for comfort from the staff.

The video showed a distressing scene where Andy held onto a staff member’s leg and wouldn’t let go, clearly needing love and support. Because he was so upset, the shelter decided to send him to their sister facility, Waldo’s Rescue Pen, in New York City, hoping he’d have a better chance at finding a happy home. “We wanted him to have a fresh start with a family that loves him,” Robinson explained.

This change turned out to be the perfect decision because the video Waldo’s Rescue Pen shared of Andy touched many people and quickly led to his adoption right before Thanksgiving.

Shortly after being released, he became overcome by rage and frustration and began violently wailing on his poor, trembling, frightened dog. It's clear that this man's violent tendencies didn't decrease after serving his time.

Now called Buddy, he has settled into a happy life with his new family in New York. “He is now named Buddy and living his best life with his family in NY. We are so happy for Buddy and his family! Thank you for choosing Waldo’s Rescue,” the shelter said in a video celebrating his adoption. That Thanksgiving, it was pretty obvious what Buddy was most thankful for.
