Sometimes you just get the feeling that you need to make a very specific decision, even if that decision doesn’t necessarily make logical sense. These “gut feelings” have a tendency to lead to something amazing, or spare us (or someone else) from impending danger. That’s exactly what happened to Calvin when he was driving home one Friday night.
But luckily for the dog that was in danger, Calvin was in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.
Calvin does his best to help animals across the Birmingham and Bessemer areas of Alabama. Ever since a tiny gray kitten cried out for help at his job, his heart fell in love with helping animals in need. He used to claim he “hated cats.” But all it took was one look into the tiny kitten’s beautiful eyes, and that was it. He was hooked.
In fact, he started to feel so passionately that he founded SOCAT (Saving One Creature at a Time) Rescue in 2016. Since its inception, Calvin has found homes for 154 cats, 64 dogs, one pig, and two alpacas.
So this is just one of a vast array of rescue stories that Calvin has played a pivital part in. But this story involves an air of mystery. It all started when Calvin was driving home from work, and he knew that he needed to take a much earlier exit than the one that leads directly to his home.
“It was Friday evening, and I was heading home and for whatever reason, something just spoke to me and told me to get off the expressway about six exits before my home. When I got off the freeway and turned on the main highway, I saw Wrinkles immediately. He was in the middle of the road, he was scared, cars were coming, honking at him,” said Calvin.
Calvin didn’t hesitate to spring into action. He immediately hopped out of his car with an open can of dog food in his hand, and did his best to lure the panicked pup out of the busy street.
Not only was Wrinkles at risk of being hit by a car, but he was in really rough shape. The poor pup was suffering from severe mange, parasites, and worms. Huge patches of his fur had fallen out, and all you could see were wrinkles. (Thus his new name.) Calvin drove Wrinkles to a foster home that night, and then picked him up in the morning to take him to a vet. It was there that he received a very clear message from the sweet pup he saved.
“He laid on the table and we just looked into each other’s eyes and the only thing I saw was that he was happy to be off the streets. You could just see the gratitude in his eyes the way he looked at me — he was just at total peace,” shared Calvin.
After six months of love and care, Wrinkles’ fur finally grew back. His wrinkles were filled in with a beautiful, thick coat of black fur, and Two By Two Animal Rescue helped him find a forever family that will smother him in love for the rest of his life.
Who knows what would have happened to Wrinkles if Calvin wasn’t there? Thankfully, he listened to the unexplainable pull from within and was there in time to save Wrinkles from a potentially disastrous fate.
