Dog Found Swimming In Lake 4 Weeks After He’d Gone Missing

| Published on August 4, 2016

On Monday, dog-mom Suzy Lesser got some amazing news after losing her dog a month ago!

Moose, a 6-year-old Yellow Lab, was being cared for by a pet sitter when something disastrous happened: he ran away from home, and couldn’t be found.

Four weeks passed without a trace of Moose, until a few days ago. He was spotted by four girls from their boat in Pewaukee Lake.

“We knew eventually it would get tired, so it was pretty urgent for us to make sure he was okay,” boater Jessica Dundon told ABC news’ WISN-TV.

Two other boaters, Klaire Nerdahl and Isabelle Herdeman, also saw Moose. They headed straight for the pup and pulled him to safety. Once he was on the boat, they used a rope as a makeshift leash.

Back on shore, the rescuers called the police department, who contacted the Elmbrook Humane Society. A staff member came to pick up Moose, and the search for his rightful family began.

“We brought him back here and went through the normal process of scanning him for a microchip,” Heather Gehrke, Elmbrook Humane Society’s executive director, told ABC News. Luckily, the information was up-to-date.

Fifteen miles away, Lesser got the call that she’d been waiting for for weeks.

“I just started crying and bawling,” she told WISN-TV.

When she reunited with Moose, she discovered that he had lost 15 pounds in the four weeks he’d been missing. Otherwise, he was healthy–and of course, incredibly happy!

“Where was he for the last four weeks? What was he doing?” Lesser said in the ABC story. “We’re very happy to have him back home with us.”
