A woman accused of trying to poison a dog was arrested wearing a t-shirt with a large cat emblem stitched on the front. Footage from KKTV shows that the woman’s mailbox is also cat-shaped.
Call it the tale of the tape. A pet parent from Colorado Springs, Colorado suspected his neighbor was attempting to poison his pup, Wrigley. Upon checking his surveillance cameras, he found evidence of such animal cruelty and notified the local animal control.
According to the Humane Society of Pikes Peak Region, poisoning cases are difficult to prove unless the perpetrator is caught red-handed, or poison-laced-chicken-handed, as the case may be. The surveillance footage caught the neighbor throwing something over the shared fence toward Wrigley. Tests later indicated it was ground chicken that contained a poisonous substance, likely antifreeze.
Luckily for Wrigley and his dad, the tainted food got caught in the fence and Wrigley wasn’t harmed. The surveillance video footage can be viewed down below.
Was Excessive Barking to Blame?
So much for “love thy neighbor.” What could drive someone to attempt to harm their neighbor’s pooch? In Colorado Springs, the local Animal Law Enforcement handles all dog-related complaints. According to the Animal Law Enforcement sources, numerous complaints of a barking dog in the area may have been behind the attempt to silence the dog.
While the Animal Law Enforcement was unable to discern where the barking came from, they believe there may be a connection between the barking dog complaints and the neighbor’s cruel behavior.
The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPP) responded to more than 40,000 calls for assistance and investigated over 4,000 cases of animal cruelty in 2018.
Charged with Aggravated Cruelty to Animals
Despite Wrigley being unharmed, the 72-year-old woman caught throwing poisoned food over the fence was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals shortly after the incident came to light in May.
She pleaded guilty to the charges and the judge ordered her to pay $250 in donations to HSPPP. In addition, she received a deferred sentence on the animal cruelty charges.
On May 4, Margaret Werker was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals. On July 9, she pleaded guilty to the charge on a deferred sentence. The judge also required her to make a $250 donation to the humane society.
She is decidedly NOT a dog person. Watch below.
