How Much Coconut Oil Should I Give My Dog?

You may have heard that coconut oil can offer wonderful health benefits for your pup. Perhaps you know that it’s anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. Maybe you’ve learned that it can help with oral, skin, and coat health, as well as aid in digestion and support the immune system. But how much coconut oil is the right amount to feed your dog?

First and foremost, any dietary changes or questions should be run by your vet. But if you get the green light to start incorporating coconut oil into your canine’s diet, you’ll need to know the appropriate amount to give him. After all, there can always be too much of a good thing!

According to Dr. Karen Becker and Dogs Naturally Magazine, the dosage should be around one teaspoon for every 10-20 pounds of body weight, given every day or every couple of days. It’s a good idea to start with even smaller amounts when introducing something new into your dog’s diet in order to give him some time to adjust.

Many pets love the taste of coconut oil and will lick it right off the spoon, or they may prefer to devour a dollop of it on top of their food. In fact, this tasty “treat” may be one of the easiest habits to incorporate into your pup’s healthy routines!

See what Dr. Karen Becker has to say about coconut oil in the video below:

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), coconut oil is mostly made up of saturated fats, which include Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs). These “good” fats are a great source of energy and contain lauric acid, which is antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral, helping your dog’s immune system stay strong. While coconut oil can supply lots of benefits when given orally, it can also help protect wounds so they can heal, ease skin irritation, and help with other skin and coat issues, when administered topically. Additionally, it can be used as plaque-fighting toothpaste in your dog’s oral care routine.

Coconut oil is an easy, tasty way to boost your pup’s health every day. With the “okay” from your vet, it may be time to consider adding it to your dog’s diet!
