September 16th through the 22nd is Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week! This event might sound a bit sad, but it’s actually a celebration to encourage animal lovers to adopt a dog that is having a harder time finding their forever family. Some of these dogs include seniors, dogs with special needs, specific breeds, and dogs that have been up for adoption for a long time. So, it is important for dog lovers to pay attention to the amazing dogs that are in search of a home this week. One of those dogs is Yoyoma!

Yoyoma has been with Operation Paws for Homes, or OPH for short, since March 2017. She is guessed to be an American Bulldog mix that is about 4 years old. She is a sweet, beautiful girl that weighs about 50 pounds. Also, she is one of the rescue dogs that has been at OPH the longest, and she is currently being fostered in Woodbridge, Virginia.

When She First Arrived

When Yoyoma first arrived at the Wayne County, NC Animal Shelter, she was ready to nurse, but sadly, her puppies were not found with her. Around the same time that she arrived, so did a litter of puppies without a mother. The mother of the puppies was suspected to have passed away after being hit by a car. Luckily, Yoyoma is such a sweet girl that she took in the orphaned puppies.

Even though Yoyoma was very skinny back then, she was able to provide milk for the puppies. She was able to help these puppies at the most fragile stages of their lives. She easily bonded with them, and you would never even know that they weren’t her own pups!

All the puppies ended up being happy and healthy. Luckily, they were all adopted from OPH early on, but Yoyoma is still in search of a place to call home. She was adopted once, but was returned not long after because it just wasn’t the right fit.

Her Life in a Foster Home

Yoyoma has stayed with the same foster family throughout her time at OPH. Therefore, they have gotten to know her very well over time. She has quite the personality and of course, her own quirks. Her foster family has said that she is a sweet girl with a tail that’s always wagging!

She has done well around both kids and adults, but she can often be cautious around certain people at first. Also, she needs to be slowly introduced to new dogs, especially ones that bark a lot. She would be best in a home without cats or other small animals.

Since she is 4 years old, she’s had plenty of time to learn basic training. Her foster family says that she is potty trained and crate trained, and she even knows basic commands. She is very treat motivated, so food is the key to getting her to listen to you.

Yoyoma’s adoption fee has recently been reduced to $50 in order to help her find her forever home easier. She even has a guardian angel that is sponsoring her!

OPH wants to make sure that Yoyoma finds a home that is truly perfect for her. Because of this, she is eligible for an extended trial adoption to allow adopters some time to get to know her better.

She is ready to find a family that will love her for who she is, and teach her new things as necessary. As the members of OPH have said, she is not necessarily a “less adoptable” dog, but instead, she is a “diamond in the ruff!” Click here to learn more about her!
