The 10 Dog Breeds Rising Fastest in Popularity

Statistical numbers come from the American Kennel Club (AKC) annual ranking of most popular breeds.

#1 – French Bulldog

The French Bulldog has jumped from number 54 in 2003 to number 11 in 2013. This is a huge surge in popularity for this compact canine. The Labrador (Who has held the number one spot in the AKC rankings for 20+ years) just may be knocked off its pedestal by the French Bulldog at this rate.

#2 – English Bulldog

The English Bulldog has been holding steady at number 5 in the ranking for two years. In 2003 They were number 16.

#3 – Havanese

The national dog of Cuba, the Havanese has jumped from number 55 to number 25 in the last ten years. These little charmers will undoubtedly continue their climb into the top ten within the next ten years.

#4 – Rottweiler

This sturdy dog has been slowly climbing his way back into good standing. From number 15 in 2003 the Rottweiler holds steady at number 9 for the second year in a row.

#5 – Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

These little companion dogs have been falling in and out of favor since the 1660’s when their name sake (King Charles II) first showed his love of the breed. Rising from number 35 in 2003 the Cavalier has made it to number 18 in 2013.

#6 – Rhodesian Ridgeback

Bursting onto the scene in the 1950’s, the Rhodesian Ridgeback has been making a slow but steady climb in the rankings from number 53 in 2003 to number 39 in 2013.

#7 – Great Dane

This recognizable giant is gaining in popularity, partly due to its adaptability but also for their gentle nature. They have risen from 27 in 2003 to 16 in 2013.

#8 – Bernese Mountain Dog

The lumbering, lovable Bernese Mountain Dog has wormed their way into the hearts of the public; Rising from number 47 to number 32 in ten short years.

#9 – Australian Shepherd

Forget the German’s the Australian Shepherd is closing in the ranks. In ten years the Aussie’s have jumped from number 34 to number 20.

#10 – Doberman Pinscher

This regal breed fell out of favor for their supposed aggressive behavior. The Doberman seems to be making a comeback though rising from number 22 in 2003 to number 12 in 2013.
