As our dogs age, they undergo many of the same changes as humans. Their metabolism slows, potentially causing weight gain; the cartilage in their joints breaks down leading to osteoarthritis; their delicate immune systems become more susceptible to disease; and many experience the heartbreaking symptoms of canine dementia.

While we cannot stop time, we can help slow its effects with the right combination of diet, exercise, preventive veterinary care and high-quality supplements.

The following five supplements are among the most commonly recommended for aging and senior dogs.

1. Omega Fatty Acids

Omega-3 and Omega-6 are referred to as “essential” fatty acids (EFAs) because your dog’s body requires them, but cannot manufacture them on its own. In order to stay healthy, they must take in these EFAs through their diet or through supplementation.

Omega fatty acids are known for promoting soft, shiny coats, but they do so much more – especially for seniors. These substances are thought to support critical brain function and are often included in “anti-aging” products for humans.

There is also evidence that they help boost the immune system – a critical benefit to aging dogs with increasingly sensitive systems, and their anti-inflammatory properties offer arthritis support when paired with other supplements designed to promote joint health.

Omega 3-6-9 Select Chews provide the Omega-3 and -6 your dog’s body craves and includes an additional boost of the non-essential fatty acids Omega-9, DHA, EPA, and GLA for their powerful anti-inflammatory effects.

2. Glucosamine & Chondroitin with MSM

Glucosamine and chondroitin are structural components of cartilage, which is the tissue responsible for cushioning the joints. Dogs with osteoarthritis suffer from the rapid destruction of their cartilage tissue. Clinical evidence suggests Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements can help ease achy, inflamed joints in arthritic dogs.

MSM, short for methylsulfonylmethane, is a naturally occurring chemical that helps the body efficiently use vitamins and nutrients, protects cartilage from deterioration, and reduces joint pain caused by osteoarthritis. Unfortunately, MSM levels in a dog’s body decrease with age, and must be supplemented to help protect the joints.

Project Paws® Hypoallergenic Hip & Joint Soft Chews contain all three of these important anti-inflammatory supplements as well as additional support from Creatine, Turmeric, Boswellia, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamins, Minerals, and Omega Fatty Acids.

3. Probiotics

Many events in a dog’s life can disrupt the bacterial balance in the gut including stress, gastrointestinal illness, and treatment with antibiotics. The “good” bacteria in the digestive tract are critical for breaking down food into essential nutrients.

Supplementing with probiotics provides your dog with controlled doses of good bacteria and helps aging dogs fight off disease, maintain healthy digestion, and recover from stress.  The four-in-one formula of Pronine™ Flora contains Probiotics, Prebiotics (the “food” good bacteria eat), Digestive Enzymes, and Gut-Soothing Herbs to restore and maintain bacterial balance and support overall colon and bowel health.

4. SAM-e Liver & Brain Support

SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine) is the bioactive form of methionine, an essential amino acid. It is one of the most commonly used supplements in human and veterinary medicine because it is involved in more than 40 chemical reactions in the body.

SAM-e is highly recommended for dogs with compromised liver function due to age, disease, or longterm NSAID use; but it also supports brain health and helps counteract canine cognitive dysfunction in aging dogs when given regularly.

Project Paws® SAM-e Advanced tablets have a high absorption rate and are fortified with the extra benefits of added amino acids, B Vitamins, and Zinc.

5. Multi-Vitamins

Many dog owners opt to give their aging pups a multi-vitamin to ensure their nutritional needs are fully met. While not necessary for dogs fed fully balanced diets, multi-vitamins are an excellent way to supplement dogs that get more than 10% of their daily calories from treats and table food as well as working dogs, seniors, and those that are extremely active.

Project Paws® Advanced Vitamin & Mineral Support tablets provide 20 vitamins and minerals, plus a high quality source of protein to keep your dog feeling healthy, energetic, and young!

Before making any major changes to your dog’s routine, visit your vet for a comprehensive physical exam and diagnostics. With a clear picture of overall health, he or she can recommend the best supplements and lifestyle changes for your dog’s individual needs.
