The winter months are the most dangerous for home fires – with all the heaters, candles, Christmas trees and combustible decorations, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. It’s stressful leaving pets alone in the house, knowing if there’s a fire or gas leak they could be trapped and help may come too late. These facts from the U.S. Fire Administration show how dangerous winter can be:
- In an average year, heating is the cause of 17 percent of structure fires, but during the winter heating fires jump to 27 percent of structure fires.
- Winter holiday fires are more severe than the average fire during the year.
- Christmas tree fires are dangerous, with fatalities per fire five times greater and the dollar loss per fire over three times the winter holiday average. This is caused by the rapid spread of a tree or decoration fire.
