Therapy Dogs Help Actors Cope With Difficult Scenes On Hit Drama

If you watched Netflix’s series, 13 Reasons Why then you know there are several scenes that are disturbing to say the least. The portrayals of bullying, suicide, alcohol abuse and sexual assault are cringe-worthy for viewers, and they also took a toll on the young actors. In anticipation of this emotional strain, the production team reportedly brought in therapy dogs for at least one of the controversial scenes.

The hit show is based on the YA novel of the same name by Jay Asher. It tells the story of Hannah Baker who has taken her own life before the show even begins. Prior to committing this tragic act, she made 13 tapes to be passed along to selected classmates, explaining how their actions impacted her decision.

While therapy dogs are being utilized more often and in a broader range of situations, this is the first I have heard of them visiting the set of a television show. We know from their work at hospitals, retirement homes, schools, disaster scenes, hospices and funeral homes that therapy dogs can reduce stress, stabilize blood pressure and raise morale.

Given the subject matter of the show, the cast of 13 Reasons Why were likely in major need of these services.

Dylan Minnette, the 20-year-old actor who plays the male lead, was able to head home to L.A. for some decompression time between shooting days. Newcomer, Katherine Langford – also 20 – did not have the same advantage after her scenes as Hannah. She calls Australia home!

Langford told E! that when the therapy pups weren’t available for snuggles, she coped with the stress by watching reruns of The Office and playing piano.

One week after Reasons premiered, she addressed fans via Instagram with a message of support for those dealing with the controversial issues covered by the show.

Marking one week since 13 Reasons Why dropped on Netflix, and the response has been so overwhelming. Thankyou to everyone who has watched and responded to the show so far. This is a story I feel affects so many people, and I’m proud we were able to tell it in the way that we did. Even though this is a show/ there for entertainment, if at any point you or someone you know needs help, please go to 13ReasonsWhy.info for resources and information. Additionally, if you’ve just finished the season ’13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons’, is available on Netflix also. Please know that you are never alone, and that there are places to go and people who care. ❤

13 Reasons Why has helped to raise awareness of the issues teens face every day. It’s nice to know that the talented young actors found some well-deserved canine relief while working to deliver these important messages.
