“Landed in Thailand! Since Rescue Rebuild typically travels across the United States, builds that are in different countries are even more spectacular and unique… this one especially!

“Soi Dog Foundation is fighting the Asian dog meat trade and looking to improve the welfare of dogs and cats in Asia, resulting in better lives for both the animal and human communities. They hope to create a society without homeless animals and to ultimately end animal cruelty.

“Established in 2003 in Phuket, Thailand to help the street dogs and cats who had no one else to care for them, the Soi Dog Foundation provides a humane and sustainable solution to managing the stray population and addressing their medical needs. Their work with street animals consists of spaying and neutering to prevent unwanted puppies and kittens being born into short lives of suffering, along with the rescue, vaccination, medical treatment, sheltering and adoption of those that cannot return to their territory. The average number of animals sterilized and vaccinated per month in 2018 was 6,467. Yes, you read that correctly. How incredible!

“The shelter that the Rescue Rebuild team worked is Soi Dog’s main adoption shelter, but it acts as the adoption front for their meat trade shelter in Buriram, Thailand. Together with volunteers through the Mars Ambassador program, the team all got to manage one of their biggest issues… rain! Compared to Tucson, Arizona at our home office that gets 12 inches of rain per year, Thailand gets 87 inches annually. Wow! What a drastic difference! The Rescue Rebuild and Mars team worked hard to get their property a little more ‘rainproof.’

“We started off with building two salas. These provide shelter and get the animals up off the ground. The skin fungal issues are out of control with all the rain, as this fungi traps moisture in skin folds, especially in between their claws. Getting their paws onto dry ground reduces these issues dramatically, which also reduces veterinary care costs.

“The driveway would constantly flood out, so the team filled in the major dips that became lakes with gravel. Then we graveled the entire driveway… with 100 metric tons of gravel. We did this using rakes. Many, many rakes. In very high heat.

“We broke so many rakes during this process, to the point where volunteers wanted to pool their money to rent a tractor or skid steer. But all of this hard work will certainly pay off, knowing that the flooding issue is under control.

“Of course, we cannot forget about the cats. We built cat activity towers so they would not feel left out. These activity towers help with enrichment and providing the cats with something new and different to climb and perch. This was such an extraordinary build… rewarding to say the least.”
