I was playing with my brothers and sisters after having an awesome lunch from mom. My human lady came over and we were so excited we wagged our tails and stumbled over each other to get the chance to be picked up and snuggled and kissed by our human lady. I was chosen and wagged my tail even harder to show my love the only way I knew how. I begged to kiss her face and whimpered a little. I heard her tell the strange lady that I was a full blood Maltese, whatever that means, and that I would be 1500 dollars. Pretty sure I’m a puppy not a dollars. Then I was handed to this new stranger lady and she cuddled me and kissed me. She was so warm and spoke in soft words. I was happy.
Then we left my home. I was set down on my new human’s lap in a warm towel and she even gave me a little toy. I was so warm and snuggly I immediately fell asleep as we rode home. When I got home I was told I was special and would always be loved and would never leave my new human’s side. I felt safe. Then they introduced me to 2 other dogs; a large, round, slobbering bull dog that wanted to eat me and a not so friendly golden retriever that hated me from the get go. I did not feel safe and made accidents that angered my new humans. I was left, shivering and cold, in a crate for hours on end. I cried a lot. My humans would disappear for hours on end and I never knew when, or if, they would return. Often times, when they did get home, I’d be so excited to get picked up and play with them that I’d have accidents. That made them angry. I didn’t want to potty where I slept. And she never played with me or snuggled with me again. My male human only played with the other 2 mean dogs. I cried some more. One day, after my humans let me run outside and play I met a man next door that would sit out on his front porch and had a nice black lab and he’d let me play with his dog. Her name was Lana and she was so gentle with me and she’d run with me, play with me and when we were tired she’d lay next to me. She became my very best friend in the whole wide world. Lana’s human was nice to me too. He’d scratch my head and belly and play with me and always got a big smile when he’d see me bursting out of my door. He called me Fandango but whispered in my ear he hated that name. I just figured he could call me anything.
One day my humans got so mad with me they took me out back, I thought we were going to play, my human chained me up to a tree and wouldn’t let me back in my house. I had a small wooden house to sleep in but no one to play with. I cried and dreamed of running through the tall grasses with Lana and her human. They would pass my yard every day and disappear down the trail and Lana, excitedly would run ahead, bounding down the trail. I cried. Sometimes the man would say hi to me and I’d wag my tail but he would never come get me and let me play with them or go on adventures with them. I wonder where they went or what they did. I missed playing and my long white coat got dirty and matted and it got hard to see.
One day a bunch of humans came to our house and I could see them taking our furniture and putting big, brown boxes filled with our stuff in stacks by the hallway. I scratched at the door. I barked as loud as I could! I yelled for my humans. They didn’t hear me. It started to rain. I didn’t care. I wanted to know why all these humans were taking our stuff. I’ve stayed out in the rain many times. Even when the white stuff would come down and it was so cold I’d shiver at night. I barked as loud as I could. I was drenched and shivering and my human came. She reached down and picked me up. Loving her as much as I did I wagged my tail and tried to kiss her face. She took me out the front door and took me over to Lana’s house. Maybe I get to play with Lana and her human while the humans take the rest of our stuff. That would be fun. My human told the man that I was $500 and he gave her some paper and she handed me to him and he hugged me so tight. I squirmed but he held me. His house was so warm and smelled great! Lana came over and kept trying to smell me. I wagged my tail. After Lana’s human cut all my hair and gave me a warm, soapy bath he dried me off and let me run around his house as fast, and crazy, as I could. Lana ran with me and we played and played. After a while Lana’s human picked me up and put me on his lap and kissed my nose and hugged me tight. His eyes were leaking and I felt sorry for him and I pressed against his cheek. Gently licking his nose. I felt so bad for him. What could I do to make him feel better. Then, in a cracked voice, he told me you’re home now. You’re safe. You will never be left behind or ignored again… and never be left outside. He called me Rufus and I liked that name and licked his nose.
And that’s how Rufus came to live with me and Lana.
