      Hello,

I’m really considering buying from a breeder vs. A shelter. I’m a student who’s approvapproved for a ESA to live with my in my on campus apartment but I’m having an extremely hard time getting my hands on a dig via rescue. Although I’m in school I have a pretty open schedule, i work from home and I can financially support a dog. My living situation although on campus is permanent. My family as owned dogs before but this would be the first dog in my name. We’ve never surrendered any of our animals. My roommates and landlord approve of me taking in a dog and I’ve allowed them to get in touch with my landlord as eell. I lead a very quiet life and I’m at home most of the time. I really wanted to adopt because I don’t have a preference in the breed, age or gender of the dog. I thought by rescuing instead of buying was a good idea but I’ve been searching for about 2 months and I’ve sent requests on about 4 dogs in the last 2 months and Ive gotten rejected from all of them because of it not being a “good fit.” After expressing that the dog I’ve asked about isnt a good fit the whole process is over and I didnt get the pp didnt get the option to be matched with another dog that mught be a better fit. Ive sent out about 80 bucks collectively to shelters for application fees, I end up getting waitlisted or overall rejected with my money gone as as a donation to shelters that aren’t considering me. Ive also been approved for a dog, paid the depsosit to find out that the foster home decided to adopt, my application was pushed aside, my deposit was non refundable, I had to hsve the humilation of of buying things/preparing for a dog that was approved to me and I had to call the shelter to see what was going. I’m taking on a dog for health reasons I consider it sort of time sensitive. I know for FACT that im getting a dog regardless but I’d really like to adopt because I still think its the right thing to do but I’m losing so much money and time so I’m not sure if I should find a breeder or keep trying with a rescue. I’m not made of money and I’m spending money I’ve bee saving exclusively for my new dog. The more money I spend getting rejected is the money I could be spending on my dog. Help?

I am so sorry you’re having so much trouble. Your heart is certainly in the right place and you’re trying to do the right thing. In my opinion, too many rescues and shelters wait for the elusive perfect pet parent when a wonderfully good one would be just right. I’m a major dog-centered person and I’ve been rejected by rescues, one of which said I was a “horrible person and how could I live with myself” because we weren’t using heartworm prevention at the time. Sigh.

Anyway, back to you. I don’t think you’ve found the right place yet, but it sounds like you don’t have much time. If you attempt any more shelters (and shelters seem to be easier to adopt from in my experience), make sure you ask about donation refunds ahead of time. It was unconscionable for them to keep your money after the adoption fell through, and for no fault of your own. Have you tried petfinder.com?

If you have to go to a breeder, make sure you get a good one. Try these tips from the Humane Society (http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/puppy_mills/tips/finding_responsible_dog_breeder.html?referrer=https://www.google.com/). And good luck in finding your just-right fur baby!
