My daughter was given a puppy dachshund. The pup was going well going on the wee wee pads placed. Now she seems to go off the pads and we are confused because sometimes she uses the ones we lay out and sometimes not. Also I think my daughter made a mistake in leaving the pup to sleep with her. The pup has not had “accidents” on the bed and sleeps all night but when we leave house and she is put in crate she cries and whines all the time so I think my daughter started a bad habit of her being out not in the crate.
Pup is 3 months old is it too late to put her back in crate while we are home and stop her from sleeping with my daughter? The crate is next to her bed and yes the pup goes in it for her toys and treats and when we leave house but at night no and when we are home she is out with my daughter in her room and mine. She cries and whines in the crate and has no off switch that I can see.
      Thanks

My pup did the exact thing around that age – I got into a habit of dipping the new wee wee pad into the old one so that it had her scent on it until it stopped. She is now two and still sometimes has accidents next to the wee wee pad if it is not the large size. My pup also cries but not at night. She has serious separation anxiety so she cries when we leave her during the day. I made the mistake of never crate training so I think this is part of the issue. I would say maybe you should get her used to being in the crate at night to eliminate this behavior now while shes still young. They are such a smart breed! Hope that helps!

Get rid of the puppy pads unless you leave the dog home but to get her to go outside take her out every two hours and praise her when she goes outside, or train her using dog doorbells(they hang on the inside of the door on a ribbon and has bells on it that the dog rings with his paw or nose). The training every two hours helps get them get used to going outside to pee outdoors then it will become a habit.
