Wondering how many of you deal with seizures and your chi. Mine has to have Bromide daily and now the possibility of adding phenobarbitol also. Does any one have pups that deal with this?

I have a 7 year-old chihuahua mix that we adopted last year and he’s on Phenobarbital and he’s doing really well on it. We had struggle with the previous medication to be seizure-free and he’s only had one seizure so far being on Pheno. He started back in September 2015. Its also helped him gain weight to a normal and healthy amount.

I have a chihuahua I rescued in 2008 when he was 4. April will mark 8 years with me and he takes phenobarbital daily for seizures. Complete control for years. Please don’t let this scare you as long as they can find the correct dosage for your pup. Best of luck to both of you.

My 4 year old Chihuahua was diagnosed with a liver shunt when he was only 2 after having a few of what we thought were seizures. Found animal nutritionists in Seattle who provided a very strict, completely organic diet which has worked wonders!!! Been on the diet for almost 2 years. Check out doglivershunt.com.
He’s like a new dog now!!! -

I had a toy poodle who had seizures. We adopted a chihuahua from a no kill shelter and they were feeding grain free dog food so I started feeding the same. He did not have anymore seizures until he got older and I had to start on some canned food mixed with his dry. I bought some good canned food, but not grain free. He started having slight seizures. I switched to grain free canned food or cooked some chicken and put broth on his dry food. He never had another seizure.

Ask your vet about Zonisamide. It has been long used for humans for seizures and only recently for dogs. I has virtually NO side effects like traditional canine seizure meds. When I adopted one of my Chihuahuas 7 years ago he was having seizures, a few a week so he needed medication. The doc put him on Zonisamide and the seizures virtually ceased to exist. The couple he has had have been so mild I wasn’t even sure if he was having one because the medication toned it down so much.
