Georgy, my 75ish lbs./1.5 year old pit loves chasing his tail. He spends hours on end whirling in circles and tiring himself out. I am worried because he often crashes into anything in his tail-chasing path, including furniture, doors, and walls. When he is exhausted I sometimes hand him his tail to play with, but he is very adamant about catching it on his own, without his moms help; he is a big boy after all.
Any advice on this incessant whirling and tail chasing in general?

You need to stop this behavior immediately with distraction with whatever it takes. This turns into a very severe psychological and sometimes neurological problem. Take your dog to the dog park, get him a friend (dog or cat), but stop the tail chasing

Hi Lindsy, my mom has a dog that chases her tail all the time. We spoke to her trainer, and what she said was that most dogs that do this are dogs that are crated a lot, or had spent a lot of time in a crate when they were younger. This is what dogs that are crated or have been crated do out of boredom. I don’t know if your dog is crated or ever has been, but this is a sign of a dog that has spent a lot of time in a crate. The only thing you can do to stop it is to just tell them to stop when they are doing it. My mom rescued her dog, and unfortunately she had spent a lot of time in a crate before my mom rescued her. I hope this helps? If your dog has never been crated, then I guess she/he is doing it out of boredom.

I hope you have been able to put an end to your dog’s tail chasing. This is indeed a very serious disorder in dogs similar to obsessive compulsive disorder in people. You may need the help of a veterinarian who specializes in behavior. Whatever you do, NEVER encourage this tail chasing by offering him his tail!!
