What is the best leash for a Mal? My Mal is starting to slightly pull and is always wheezing/gasping for air. I feel so bad for her. Is there something better to use that won’t go around her neck?

      Your puppy mal is adorable!
We have 2 mals & instinctively they want to pull. We have had success with a no-pull harness from 2houndsdesign.com.
They are handmade in the USA & warrantied.
It doesn’t stop them from pulling if they really want a squirrel but it stops them from pulling you over & dragging you down the street!
      Good luck!

Hi Dana. Love the pup pic. I was owned by a beautiful Mal myself. Ive found and have been told by many a breeder and trainer that female Mals are harder to deal with than males; stubborn and smarter than their owners. We began basic obedience at 4 mths, as soon as we got Cheekah. Socialization is also imparative for a Mal. Both should be done their whole lives. I cant stress this enough. I was at my wits end when I finally used a pronged collar. Believe me, I thought the same thing you are now. I was mistaken. Its quite humane and effective if used/worn properly. Try it on yourself; I did. For pups u might want to start with smaller prongs. Extra links are available. Using those rubber tips may make you feel better but they just wind up pulling your dogs hair. Ouch. Collar should be placed snugly but not tight, high on neck, almost behind ears. You shouldnt be able to slip it over tbeir head. NEVER allow your dog to pull while wearing this collar. It is meant for correction. While walking dog use “heel” command or your choice. As soon as you feel even the slightest tug, give a quick jerk and release motion toward back. Be consistant. Use treats as a reward. Mals are highly food motivated! I refused to do this thinking that my Mal will “just listen to me”. I could have saved both of us alot of frustration. Within 2 days I had her under complete control. Not always the case and you may have to tweek training for your dog. Another secret…respect. With female Mals, you get what you give. None of his dominance bull$#!t for them. Putting this time into your dog is not only necesarry but fun. It can make a huge difference with any dog but especially one who grows up to be 160 lbs! You read that right. My “runt of the litter”. Good luck! I miss you Cheekah, my first, my only, my last.
