It sure was a rough start to life for a sweet rescue pup named “Sanctuary.” He and two of his brothers were discovered after being discarded in a cardboard box on the street. They were obviously injured, underfed, and exhibiting neurological symptoms. But now, he’s happy, healthy, and has a snazzy wheelchair that helps him get around.
Both of his brothers have already been adopted, but Sanctuary is still looking for his forever family just shy of a year after he was saved.
It was on a cold February night back in 2022, that the three six-week-old Pit Bull puppies were discovered in an alley in St. Louis. Once they were scooped-up off the street, they spent several weeks at Stray Rescue of St. Louis’ veterinary clinic. It was there that their abrasions and injuries were tended to, and they finally had their bellies filled. All three of them spent several weeks there, but soon found their way to foster homes.
Why Can’t Sanctuary Walk Very Well On His Own?
Sanctuary has a neurological condition known as cerebellar hypoplasia. So his cerebellum is either smaller than usual, or it’s not entirely developed. Since that is the section of the brain that is responsible for motor functions, he has difficulty moving, and maintaining proper balance, posture, and coordination.
But thanks to Walkin’ Pets, Sanctuary has an incredible wheelchair that allows him the ability to move around, and maintain his independence.
“His wheelchair has made the biggest difference in his life. It has helped him physically, mentally, and emotionally. He can run, walk, eat, drink, and go to the bathroom on his own,” says Sanctuary’s foster mom, Clare.
While there is no cure for his disability, Sanctuary can still live an incredibly happy, healthy life.
This sweet boy is incredibly friendly, patient through his physical therapy appointments, and is well-behaved during socialization classes. He loves to play with his toys (especially his lamb chop) and cuddling up on the couch after a fun-filled day. Plus, he’s incredibly smart and super silly.
