Wheelchair-Bound Pup Spends Over A Year Looking For A Family With Not One Application

| Published on July 26, 2022

Bebe the German Shepherd/Husky Mix was just three months old when she was abandoned. An unknown person left her on the doorstep of a small veterinary hospital. She was just a baby – small and alone in a big, scary world.

Bebe then spent the next three months in a tiny, cramped cage at the hospital, unable to run and play as a normal dog would. She had neither a home nor a family to come to her rescue.

Due to her prolonged stay in this much-too-small cage, the muscles in Bebe’s hind legs deteriorated significantly. After all, she was in the midst of her developmental stage. Her inability to exercise as she aged significantly impacted her body’s ability to build muscle.

Bebe’s Rescue

At around six months of age, Bebe was rescued by The Animal Pad in San Diego, California. Her muscles had atrophied significantly by this time, and she was very weak and fragile. After her initial evaluation, medical personnel at the rescue determined that her hind limbs were nearly useless. The most effective course of treatment for Bebe would be the amputation of both hind limbs.

She was young enough, at this time, to be an excellent surgical candidate and recovered very quickly. Following her amputation, Bebe was fitted with a custom-made wheelchair. This device now gives her the freedom to run and play like a normal dog. She is thriving both in therapy and in life!

Pairing her newfound freedom with her bright smile and fun personality,  Bebe was ready for adoption. Her friends at The Animal Pad believed Bebe would find a forever home in no time.

Unfortunately, this was not the case.

Why Does No One Want Me?

It has now been over a year since Bebe became eligible for adoption. She has fully recovered from her surgery and has learned to walk very well with her own set of wheels. She even has a custom license plate on her wheelchair. It reads, in bold yellow letters, “ADOPT ME.”

However, despite the prompts of her custom plate, Bebe has not received a single application for adoption. In an entire year, not one person wanted Bebe enough to apply.

Bebe’s caretakers at The Animal Pad are saddened by the lack of interest in this sweet girl. How could no one want a pup with such an incredible story? However, despite their shock and sadness, they are determined never to give up hope.

Bebe’s perfect family is out there somewhere.

Staff at The Animal Pad describe Bebe as a playful, feisty girl who loves attention:

“I am a super friendly girl and have become somewhat of a neighborhood fav,” says Bebe. “When I see my chariot being brought out, I know that it’s time for some fun.”

A Special Family For A Special Girl

Bebe is considered a special-needs dog due to her mobility issues. She is incontinent, meaning her future owner will need to be comfortable helping her with a bit of “clean up” following her potty breaks. She is also on Prozac for her anxiety and will need to continue physical therapy to build up the muscles in her upper body.

Despite her special requirements, Bebe will make the perfect companion for anyone willing to devote their time. She is the sweetest, most adorable girl out there and would love to have a forever home before another year goes by!
