Dog Dream Job: Pup Employed As Maritime Museum’s “Seagull Security Dog”

| Published on August 25, 2016

If you’ve ever had your car, deck, or beach towel bird-bombed, you know how much of a messy nuisance bird poo can be!

Located on the coast, the Australian National Maritime Museum is a natural target for seagull slop. According to 702 ABC Sidney, the museum had tried multiple methods to deter the doo-droppers, including water sprays and fake birds, but to no avail. So after learning that airports often use dogs to keep birds at bay, they decided to hire a pooch.

Bailey had been living in foster care when he was rescued and recruited to be a Seagull Security Dog. According to Adrian Snelling, the museum’s head of security and Bailey’s handler, the pooch is a natural.

“Normally when there are seagulls down here, [Bailey] will spot them and I’ll let him off the lead and I’ll say, ‘Bailey go’,” Snelling told 702 ABC Sidney.

The pooch certainly takes his post seriously, sometimes getting a little overzealous when it comes to barking at the birds. He’s wound up in the water a handful of times, but luckily, his uniform is a bright yellow life vest that keeps him safe on such occasions.

When he’s not on duty, the pup loves to socialize with the staff, and is a “great morale booster,” according to the news story.

It sounds like Bailey has found his doggy dream job, spending all day by the sea and chasing birds to his heart’s content. And you know what they say: if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life!
