It turned out that this puppy was a purebred Alpine Dingo, which is now endangered. The dingo pup, now known as Wandi, was taken to the Australian Dingo Foundation’s sanctuary where he may eventually join the breeding program of 40 other adult dingoes. Their objective with the breeding program is to preserve the dingo species.

Lyn Watson, director of the foundation, says she hopes Wandi will be the “flagship” for Australia to grow their knowledge of dingoes and how crucial their presence is in their ecosystem.
