10 Breeds That Are Great with Young Children

| Published on May 4, 2020

Looking for just the right dog to fit your family can be difficult. Especially if you have or are planning on having kids during the dog’s lifetime. It’s a known fact that not all dogs like kids, and it’s one of the main reasons dogs end up at shelters. While all dogs are individuals, there are a few breeds that are more likely to be great with kids and here they are (in no particular order).

#1 – Golden Retriever

The Golden is a no-brainer choice for a family dog if you don’t mind the canine confetti they’ll leave throughout your house. They’re sweet and don’t seem to mind kids hanging on them. However, for really tiny kids, they can knock them over on accident due to their size and exuberant ways.

#2 – Standard Poodle

Used a lot for therapy work, the standard poodle has a nice temperament and loves kids. A chaplain at Oregon Episcopal School used to bring her standard poodle, Bruce, to school every day, where the children literally climbed all over him. He took it in stride.

#3 – Labrador Retriever

Like the golden, the lab is thought of as “the perfect family dog.” Just be mindful of the tail, which can hurt when it’s going full speed. Otherwise, they are great kid-companions, always ready to play or be used as a pillow.

#4 – Pug

If you are looking for a small dog, the tenacious pug is a good choice. They are a happy-go-lucky breed and usually enjoy interacting with everyone, including kids.

#5 – Mini Schnauzer

A smart, intelligent breed, the mini schnauzer is loyal to his family as long as he is raised with them. If you already have kids, a mini schnauzer puppy will grow up to be a fine friend for them.

#6 – Newfoundland

A guardian breed, it should be no surprise the “Newfie” is good with kids. In fact, Nana, from Peter Pan is a Landseer/Newfoundland (not a St. Bernard) and was inspired by J.M. Barrie’s own dog.

#7 – Beagle

If you don’t mind some training challenges, the beagle is great for kids. Not too small and not too big, they are the perfect size for young kids and have the energy to keep up with them. Just remember they follow their nose so a fenced yard is a must.

#8 – Collie

If Lassie is not enough to convince you that the Collie is good with young kids, just go to a local therapy dog group meeting – you will see at least a handful of Collies due to their sweet disposition and affinity toward people. Another plus, they come in a smooth coat if you are not big on grooming.

#9 – Pit Bull

Despite the bad press, this breed is actually known by those that own them as a great family dog. Pete, the famous dog from The Little Rascals was a pitty. Like all bigger dogs, there is the risk of kids getting knocked-over, and his happy tail may have a mind of its own.

#10 – Boston Terrier

Another smaller dog, the Boston is an all-American who loves life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in the form of attention and treats! They require a medium amount of exercise and minimal grooming, making them a good choice for a busy household.
