On the night of Wed. April 15, The Meriden Humane Society in Connecticut was vandalized with damage done to the small dog kennels and the Plaques in the Memorial Garden.
“Some [were] pulled completely off the foundation, tops ruined, structures bent… and we even had a few [plaques] stolen off the property,” The Meriden Humane Society claims on Facebook.
It is estimated that will cost the shelter over $2500 in unexpected expenses to repair these damages and acquire new equipment for the animals.
Shreya Sinha is not your average 13-year-old; she has a passion for giving back to the community, especially when it comes to benefiting the lives of rescue animals.
Despite being 45 minutes away, she makes the journey every weekend to volunteer at The Meriden Humane Society; a privately operated, no-kill animal rescue and shelter facility that receives no funding from the government.
“I’ve always loved animals and wanted to do more to support the no-kill organizations, Shreya says. “Since most of the shelters closer to my area had age restrictions, I’m thankful my parents agreed to have me volunteer at such a great shelter.”
While most teens sympathized the happening or disregarded the importance of the matter, Shreya took action.
“When I saw on Meriden Humane Society’s Facebook page that they were vandalized, after all they do to help the animals there, I was shocked at how someone could possibly be this disgusting- it is the animals who are hurt from this in the end,” Shreya says.
So she started a fundraising campaign to help them with their expenses and bills. She organized an online silent auction and started by soliciting donated goods from several generous pet-themed businesses across the country, including Franctasy Art, Come Clean, Puppy Transit, PawsGlobe, Pitbull Gear, Cuddle Clones, Greyt Prints, Weekly Willow, Sue Torres.
Her orginal goal was to raise $200. Through the auction, she raised $400.
Although the auction is over, you can still donate to the humane society to help cover the vandalism costs by going to Youcaring.com and donate. Every little bit counts.
