While you can’t foresee the future to know whether your new best friend will never have to go to the vet or will be there weekly, there are certain breeds that tend to be more prone to chronic issues and therefore rack up higher vet bills. Petplan Veterinary Insurance pulled their data to give us the following list of breeds at the top of the claims in terms of dollars spent at the vet. Some of the common reasons these dogs visited the vet include: cruciate injuries (average treatment cost for American Bulldog: $1,734), foreign body ingestion (average treatment cost for Doberman Pinscher: $1,881), intervertebral disc disease (average treatment cost for Great Dane: $1,854) and cancer (average treatment cost for Shar-pei: $1,140).
#1 – Shar-pei
