Well, fellow dog lovers, it’s one of our favorite times of the year. It’s time for the 2022 National Dog Show, of course! What’s better than a day full of delicious food and dapper dogs?

As in years past, The National Dog Show will air on Thursday, November 24th, right after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. The broadcast begins at 12 pm local time and covers Group and “Best in Show” judging.

You can expect to hear the commentary of long-time hosts John O’Hurley and David Frei, as they articulate the action and give us their thoughts.

How Exactly Does The National Dog Show Work?

The National Dog Show is hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, and only purebred dogs registered with the AKC can compete. The AKC recognizes 212 dog breeds and varieties that are split into seven different groups (sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting and herding).

This year, there will be up to 2,000 of the top American Kennel Club-registered dogs from across the country, representing 190 breeds.

Plus, you can see a 15-year-old show the Parson Russell Terrier in the Terrier group and the Redbone Coonhound in the Hound group.

First, they will compete with only other dogs of the same breed. They aren’t technically competing against each other, but by how well they fit their breed’s standards. The winner, or the “Best in Breed,” will then represent their breed at the next level, the group. Each winner of their group, or “First in Breed,” will go on to compete in the final round for the coveted Best in Show.

Three New Breeds Are Making Their Dog Show Debut

  • The Russian Toy is a tiny, companion pup that dates back to the Russian aristocracy and will compete in the toy group
  • The Mudi (plural, mudik) was originally bred to herd sheep and cattle, and as you may have anticipated, will compete in the herding group.
  • The Bracco Italiano is one of two native gun dogs from Italy, and will compete in the sporting group.

How Can I Watch The 2022 Dog Show?

You can watch the National Dog Show after the parade on NBC or it can be streamed via Peacock, NBCSports.com, or on the NBC Sports app. The NBC Sports app is available on mobile and connected devices, including Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire.
