The City of Rayne Animal Shelter in Rayne, Louisiana, had a lot of room for expansion. The better they can utilize their available space, the more animals they can take in and find the pets’ adoptive parents. There was also a safety concern that needed work—the perimeter fence had barbed wire strewn on top.

Barbed wire is effective in keeping predators out and keeping dogs in; however, animals can inadvertently get caught in the fencing, and it can prove deadly. Once a game plan was set, Rescue Rebuild was on their way.

First, the team removed the barbed wire. They didn’t want any dogs to get tangled up and injured. So, after removing all the barbed wire, they put up coyote rollers. These rollers spin when a predator or dog jump on the fence, not allowing them to get traction to get over the barrier. Once all of the coyote rollers were installed, and the barbed wire disposed of, the main project was about to commence.

It was a massive undertaking with such a small time frame but Rescue Rebuild and their dedicated volunteers were up to the task. The team constructed a new addition to the shelter. This addition will be used to house many more animals. They also enclosed the existing portion of the shelter, which had no sides to block the animals from the wind. Both the new and old sections included new plumbing, lighting and vent fans. But Rescue Rebuild couldn’t stop there. Next came four new play yards and indoor kennels with dog beds to keep the animals off the floor and comfortable.

So much was accomplished in those 13 days. The shelter now had a completely different look thanks to the new addition, kennels and play yards. These improvements alone have the opportunity to save an estimated 216 animals a year!
