If you don’t own a horse, you may not be familiar with the Absorbine brand, but you should be. They have branched out into the pet market and their Show Sheen for Dogs is AMAZING and will give your dog the softest, sleekest coat this side of the barn.
So, naturally, when I heard they have a new product coming out called the Woof Pouf, I was instantly interested. After all, I bath four shelties regularly…
Why hadn’t I thought of using a loofah? I use one myself…why not on the dog?
Well, that’s probably what you are all thinking right now. Why didn’t I think of that?
The team at Absorbine did think of it and they took their Woof Pouf one step further – they have infused beads of soap into the loofah, making it an all-in-one dog bathing solution. Each pouf has .33 oz of soap. The retail for about $8.99 for one loofah.
The Product
UltraShield Green Flea & Tick Woof Pouf. This loofah is infused with natural repellent soap beads. The ingredients are: Thyme oil, cedar oil, lemongrass oil, rosemary oil, citronella oil, clove oil, geraniol, sodium laurel sulfate, soap.
While I did not test this one, I do use the UltraShield Green on my horse every day and it works great. The flies don’t bother her and the oils make her coast shiny, sleek and soft. So my guess would be this shampoo works well on dogs too.
My only caution would be if you have allergies. My mom is allergic to lemongrass and she has to wash her hands immediately if I just put it on my horse or she starts itching.
ShowSheen Deodorizing Wouf Pouf. The ingredients are: sodium palmate, sodium cocoate, water, glycerin, fragrance (Ordenone complex), sodium chloride, pentasodium pentatate, tetrasodium etidronate.
This is the pouf I tested.
The Test
As mentioned, I have four shelties. The Wouf Pouf Packaging says the lather lasts up to 15 washes, so I decided to wash all four dogs in a row to see how it held up by the fourth dog.
On the first dog, it lathered right up
And it seemed to work really worked well. As owners of long haired dogs well attest, it can be hard to get the soap (and water) down the skin. The loofah does help with that and my dog’s seemed to enjoy the massage.
It was nice to not have to fumble with a shampoo bottle or worry about wasting it by accidently pouring out too much. It gave you just the right amount of shampoo (for my long-haired sheltie anyway).
But by the third dog, we had a problem…
It was not lathering up my dog. If we squeezed it really hard, and worked it, we could it to lather.
But then if we tried to rub it onto the dog, it just wasn’t working.
That was a bummer. I washed the rest of dog 3 and dog 4 with m normal shampoo. This did give me the chance to compare softness, from dog 1 & 2 to dog 4, which had no ShowSheen shampoo on him. The ShowSheen dogs were softer.
My Conclusion
If you have a short-haired dog, the Woof Pouf probably lasts longer, it might even make it to 15 washes on a small, short-haired breed. It was not anywhere near that with my shelties. The company also recommends that you not continue using the loofah after their soap runs out.
On the upside, my dogs smelled good and were really soft.
Because the shampoo and loofah are packaged so nicely, it would be ideal for travelling – you wouldn’t have to pack separate shampoos and a shammy or whatever, it’s all right there and you don’t have to worry about leaks. So I think it’s great for that use.
