Rob, a retired Major in the United States Marine Corps, was struggling with his service-connected post-traumatic stress. He longed for his life to be more than how he was living at the time. Before developing PTSD, Rob enjoyed being active, but now found it difficult to do.

Rob was approved to receive a service dog from Canines for Veterans. During this time, Felix was being tested in skills to determine readiness for partnering. Based on the skills Rob needed and his home environment, it was determined that Felix was the best choice for him. The two met in the fall of 2016.

 

Since Rob met Felix, he has started running again, something he loved but was unable to do without Felix. He has also since achieved his dive instructor certification. Most weekends Rob and Felix can be found on a dive boat instructing future divers with Felix patiently awaiting his veteran to surface.

“Before Felix, most of my time was in complete isolation. Often avoiding any chance of social interaction with anyone. The more I isolated, the worse I felt. Felix has been an amazing enabler. Using multiple PTSD commands, I am now able to participate in family activities and feel safer in public. Felix does attract attention in public, but most of the time, people are really nice and considerate. I waste no time in telling them about Canines for Veterans and how they can help by participating or donating. Felix has been a life changer for me and my family.”
